MARINE
PAINTING
Françoise Coffrant
The littoral, that is
to say, the point where the land meets the sea, offers some of the
most varied ranges of subject for the artist, as well as some of
the most changing conditions of light. As well as the sea itself,
there are landscapes, skies, boats, harbours, waterside buildings,
even the people who inhabit the scene.
This isn't a book of
techniques, but rather one of approaches. Françoise will
show you a wide selection of the available subjects and show you
how different artists have portrayed them, explaining, as she goes,
some of their working methods. The illustrations are mostly in oil
or pastel with some watercolours, but medium is scarcely important
here, because it is the ideas and the interpretations that matter,
rather than the actual methods of putting paint on paper.
It's an inspiring, rather
beautiful and very readable book.
