PAINTING UNICORNS IN WATERCOLOUR
Rebecca Balchin

I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, but the fact of the matter is that a unicorn is, artistically, just a horse with a broom handle stuck on its head. No, I can't prove that they don't exist and I don't intend to. If you share my scepticism, don't go away just yet because, if you ignore the horn (and the odd cloven foot), what you have here is one of the best books on drawing and painting horses there has ever been.

The literature of the subject may not be extensive and that's largely because horses are tricky things to handle, but Rebecca has a natural ability that is shown in both her simplicity of instruction and her portrayal of horses/unicorns as creatures that come alive on the page. Forgive her a degree of magic and concentrate on the way she builds up the elements of equine subjects and you have a valuable introduction to the subject that you won't find elsewhere.

Fabled be blowed: I reckon some of these drawings just have to be done from life.
